Dr. Livia Schiavinato Eberlin is a Professor and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, where she develops new technologies to help doctors detect cancer more quickly and accurately. With support from the V Foundation, Dr. Eberlin and her team are advancing the MasSpec Pen, a handheld device designed to help surgeons identify cancerous tissue and determine where a tumor ends and healthy tissue begins during surgery. Her work in colorectal cancer could allow surgeons to remove cancer more precisely while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Dr. Eberlin’s research has earned national and international recognition, including a MacArthur Fellowship and a Moore Inventor Fellowship.
