Dr. Amanda Dann is a V Scholar and Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at UT Southwestern whose research focuses on soft tissue sarcomas, a rare and often aggressive group of cancers. Her work asks a simple but important question: what does a tumor need in order to grow, and can we take that away? Fast-growing cancers often depend on nutrients differently than healthy tissues do, and Dr. Dann’s lab has identified metabolic pathways that sarcoma cells rely on to survive. With support from the V Foundation, she is now studying these pathways in patients with sarcoma to identify new treatment targets and develop therapies that can slow or stop tumor growth while minimizing harm to healthy cells.
Why this matters: her research could uncover new ways to essentially starve sarcoma cells of what they need to grow, creating more effective and less harmful treatments for patients with few options today.
